A family of operations, not one operation

Facelift is a category. It covers everything from limited procedures addressing the jawline to extended operations that reposition the midface, jaw and neck together. The right one depends on what has changed in your face, not on how much you want to spend or how long you can be away.

The most useful thing a consultation can do is narrow the category. Many patients arrive asking for a facelift and leave with a plan involving less surgery than they expected, because the specific problem they described did not require the full operation.

What the options address

These operations treat position and laxity. They do not treat surface quality, and the difference decides which patients are disappointed.

  • Descent of the cheek and midface, producing hollowing above and heaviness below
  • Loss of jawline definition and early jowling
  • Laxity and banding in the neck
  • None of the above: sun damage, pigmentation and fine lines, which need surface treatments instead

Recovery

Recovery scales with the extent of the operation. A limited procedure may have you socially presentable in a couple of weeks; a full deep plane operation takes longer. Bruising varies enormously between individuals and is largely outside anyone's control.

In every version, the result at one month is swollen rather than final. Judging the outcome early is the most reliable way to be unhappy with a good result.

When this operation is not the answer

  • What bothers you is skin texture, pigment or fine lines. Surgery will not change those.
  • You are looking for a change of face rather than a younger version of your own.
  • You cannot stop smoking around the operation.
  • You have a fixed date within a few weeks that the result must be ready for.

Common questions

What age is right for a facelift?

There is no correct age. The relevant question is whether what bothers you is descent, which surgery addresses, or surface change, which it does not.

Is a mini facelift a smaller version of the same thing?

It is a shorter operation addressing a smaller area, usually the jawline. It is a reasonable answer to a limited problem and an inadequate answer to a larger one, which is why the assessment matters more than the label.

Can I combine it with eyelid surgery?

Frequently, and the combination is common because the two address adjacent areas. Combining lengthens the single operation and recovery rather than adding two separate ones.
