Rhinoplasty Recovery: What the First Year Actually Looks Like

A nose looks presentable long before it looks final, and the gap between those two points is where most disappointment lives.

The first two weeks

A splint is usually worn for around a week. Bruising around the eyes appears in the first days and generally fades within two weeks, though how much you bruise varies enormously and is largely outside anyone's control.

Breathing feels congested because the internal lining is swollen, not because anything is wrong. This resolves gradually and is one of the more misinterpreted parts of the recovery.

The swelling nobody warns you about

Most swelling settles in the first months, but not all of it, and not evenly. The tip is the last area to resolve and can stay subtly full for a year or more, particularly in thicker skin.

This is why surgeons ask patients not to judge the result early, and why photographs taken at three months do not represent the outcome. Judging at one month and concluding the operation failed is a common and avoidable distress.

Looking after the skin

Skin over the nose can be dry, oily or unusually sensitive for a while, and sensation is often altered. Keep it simple: gentle cleansing, sun protection, and nothing abrasive or active near the incisions until your surgeon clears it.

Sun protection matters more than usual because healing skin pigments more readily, and a scar that darkens takes far longer to fade.

Flying home

The timing comes from your surgeon rather than from your booking. Beyond comfort, any operation carries a clot risk that flying adds to, and swollen nasal airways make the cabin unpleasant.

Build the travel plan around the surgical advice. Booking a return flight first and asking afterwards is the wrong order.

Common questions

When will my nose look normal?

Presentable is usually a matter of weeks once the splint and bruising have gone. Settled is around a year, with the tip last.

Why is my nose still blocked?

Internal swelling makes the airway feel narrow for weeks after surgery. It improves gradually. Persistent obstruction beyond that should be assessed rather than accepted.

Can I wear glasses?

Not resting on the bridge in the early period, since pressure on healing bone can affect the result. Your surgeon will tell you when and how, and there are workarounds in the meantime.
