Eyelid Surgery in Turkey

Blepharoplasty removes or repositions the skin and fat that make the eyes look tired. One of the smallest operations here with one of the largest visible effects.

Small operation, large effect

Blepharoplasty removes or repositions the skin, muscle and fat that make eyes look tired. On the upper lid it usually means removing a fold of skin that has begun to hood the eye. On the lower lid it more often means repositioning fat that produces bags, rather than simply cutting it away.

It is among the smaller operations here and among the most noticeable in effect, because the eyes are where people look first.

Upper and lower are different problems

Upper lid surgery is straightforward in concept: excess skin is removed and the crease is set. Where the eyebrow has also descended, lifting the brow may do more than removing lid skin, and treating the wrong one leaves the patient looking the same.

Lower lid surgery is more technically demanding. Removing too much skin or fat pulls the lid down and hollows the area, which ages the eye rather than refreshing it. Modern approaches favour repositioning over removal for this reason.

Recovery

Bruising around the eyes is expected and typically fades over two weeks. Vision is often blurred at first from ointment and swelling. Most people are comfortable in public at around two weeks, sooner with the upper lids alone.

Dryness and grittiness are common early and usually settle. Scars sit in the natural crease of the upper lid and just below the lash line on the lower, and generally become hard to see.

Risks

Dry eye is the most common ongoing complaint and is more likely if you already have it, which is why it should be asked about before surgery. Lower lid malposition, where the lid sits lower than it should, is the complication that most affects appearance and is harder to correct than to avoid.

Asymmetry between the two eyes can persist, since eyes rarely start symmetrical.

When this operation is not the answer

  • You have significant untreated dry eye.
  • The real problem is a descended eyebrow rather than lid skin.
  • You have a thyroid eye condition or other active eye disease that has not been assessed.

Common questions

Will it change the shape of my eye?

It should not. The aim is the same eye, less obscured. Techniques that change shape are a different conversation and should be raised explicitly, not discovered afterwards.

How long do the results last?

Upper lid results are generally long-lasting because the skin removed does not return. Ageing continues around them, so the area changes over years without the original fold coming back.

Can it be done under local anaesthetic?

Upper lid surgery often can be, sometimes with sedation. Lower lid work and combined procedures more often use general anaesthesia. The choice depends on the extent and on your preference.
