Mastopexy raises and reshapes the breast without necessarily adding volume. Frequently confused with augmentation, and the difference decides the operation.
Lifting is a different operation from filling
Mastopexy raises the breast and repositions the nipple, removing loose skin and reshaping the tissue underneath. It does not add volume. A lifted breast is usually the same size as before, sitting higher, with a tighter outline.
People arrive asking for one and needing the other more often here than anywhere else on this site. The quick test a surgeon uses is where the nipple sits relative to the fold beneath the breast: if it has dropped below it, no implant will fix the position.
The trade you are making is scars
A lift removes skin, and removing skin leaves scars. How much and where depends on how much lift is needed: a small correction may need only a scar around the areola, while a larger one needs an additional vertical scar and sometimes a horizontal one in the fold.
This is a real trade and it should be shown to you clearly before you consent, not described vaguely. A surgeon who tells you the scars are minimal without knowing how much lift you need has not assessed you.
Lift with an implant
Combining a lift with an implant is common and it addresses both position and volume, but it is a more demanding operation than either alone: the surgeon is tightening the skin envelope and enlarging its contents at the same time, which are opposing forces.
Some surgeons stage it into two operations for exactly that reason. If that is proposed to you, it is a technical judgement rather than an upsell.
When this operation is not the answer
- You want to be larger. A lift alone will not make you larger.
- You are planning further pregnancies or significant weight loss, both of which will undo it.
- You are not prepared to accept the scar pattern your degree of lift requires.
- You smoke and cannot stop. Nipple healing depends on blood supply, and smoking is the main threat to it.
Common questions
Will a lift make me smaller?
Not usually. Skin is removed rather than breast tissue, so the volume stays broadly the same while the shape and position change. If you want to be smaller, that is a reduction.
Can it be done without visible scars?
No. Every lift trades skin for position, and that trade leaves a scar. The honest question is how extensive the pattern needs to be, which depends on how much lift you need.
How long does it last?
Gravity, weight change and pregnancy continue afterwards. The lift resets the position, it does not stop time. Stable weight and no further pregnancies give the longest-lasting result.
