Mommy Makeover Recovery: The Weeks Nobody Plans For
The surgery is the part people research. The recovery is the part that decides whether they are glad they did it, and it is almost always underestimated.
The first two weeks
You will be sore, moving slowly, and bent slightly forward if the abdomen was repaired. If a breast procedure was included, your arms are restricted at the same time as your core, and that combination is what makes this recovery different from either operation alone.
Practical consequence: you cannot lift a toddler, reach a high shelf, or push yourself up from a low sofa. Sleeping is easier propped up. Drains, if used, come out in the first few days.
When can I lift my children?
This is the question that matters most and the one with the least satisfying answer: it depends on what was repaired and how, and your surgeon sets it. What is consistent is that it is longer than parents expect, and that ignoring it risks the muscle repair that the whole operation depends on.
Arrange help before you travel. Not after, not "we will see how it goes". This is the single most common regret reported about this operation, and it has nothing to do with the surgery itself.
What determines the cost
A mummy makeover is a combination, so the price follows what is in it rather than a fixed package. An abdominoplasty with a breast lift costs differently from an abdominoplasty with an implant, and adding liposuction to the flanks changes it again.
- Which procedures are combined, and how extensive each one is
- Total operating and anaesthetic time
- Length of hospital or clinic stay
- What follow-up is included, and what happens if a revision is needed
Ask for it itemised
A single figure with no breakdown tells you nothing and makes comparison impossible. Ask what is included, what is not, and specifically what the position is on revision surgery and who pays for it.
If a quote arrives before anyone has assessed you, it is a price for a procedure rather than a plan for a patient.
Common questions
How long is the total recovery?
Desk work is often possible in the second to third week; lifting, core loading and exercise take considerably longer and are set by your surgeon. Swelling settles over months, so the shape at six weeks is not the final shape.
Is it cheaper to combine procedures?
Usually cheaper than having them separately, because you pay once for anaesthesia and one stay. But combining is a clinical decision first: if the total operating time or blood loss would be unsafe, staging is the correct answer regardless of cost.
Can I have it if I want more children?
It is not advised. The abdominal muscle repair does not survive a subsequent pregnancy, and you would be paying for an operation you would need again.
