Cosmetic Surgery for Men: What Is Actually Being Asked For
The requests are consistent and mostly unglamorous: the chest, the waistline, the nose and the jaw. What differs from female patients is not the motivation but the anatomy.
What men most often ask about
Gynaecomastia correction is the most common by a distance, and it is frequently the one men have thought about for years before asking. Beyond that: abdominal and flank contouring, rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery and jawline definition.
- Gynaecomastia (enlarged male breast tissue)
- Liposuction to the flanks, abdomen and chest
- Rhinoplasty, often with a functional component
- Eyelid surgery and facial rejuvenation
Why the technique differs
Male tissue is generally more fibrous, which makes liposuction physically harder and is one of the few genuine indications for energy-assisted techniques. Male skin is thicker, which affects how contours read and how scars behave.
In facial surgery, the aesthetic target is different: preserving a heavier brow, a straighter dorsum and a squarer jaw. A technique that produces a good result in a female patient can feminise a male one, which is a technical failure rather than a matter of taste.
Practical differences in recovery
Male patients have a higher rate of haematoma after facelift surgery, partly due to blood supply to the beard area and partly because raised blood pressure is more common. This is a reason blood pressure control before surgery is taken seriously rather than treated as paperwork.
Beard-bearing skin also changes facelift planning, since repositioning it can move hair-bearing skin to places it did not previously grow.
Common questions
Is gynaecomastia surgery just liposuction?
Rarely. Most cases involve both fat and firm glandular tissue, and liposuction alone leaves the gland behind the nipple. Excising it through a small incision at the areolar border is what completes the result.
Will people be able to tell?
A well-planned result reads as unremarkable, which is usually the stated goal. Overcorrection is what draws attention, particularly in the chest and the eyes.
Do men recover differently?
Broadly the same, with two specific points: fibrous tissue can mean more bruising after liposuction, and haematoma risk after facial surgery is higher, which makes blood pressure control important.
